Reading Specifications with the Missing Context
A field guide to reading specifications with the model, method and market still attached.
Three kinds of information
A manufacturer claim, an independent measurement and a personal impression answer different questions. A useful article labels each one instead of presenting them all as equivalent facts.
Read the conditions beside the number
Check the mode, version and test conditions associated with each figure. When conditions are missing, preserve that limitation in the record. Do not calculate a confident comparison from incompatible figures.
Keep the complete source
Record the exact page address, title, publisher and access date. A link to a brand homepage is useful background, but a specific claim should link to the document that actually supports it.
Use an evidence table
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Identity | Model, market and version |
| Claim | Exact figure and its context |
| Method | Published conditions or “not provided” |
| Source | Full URL and access date |
Avoid the false precision trap
Adding decimal places or a ranking does not repair weak evidence. A clear “unknown” can be more informative than a precise number assembled from incompatible sources.
Keep the source, method and limitations together.
