THE RESEARCH TOOLKIT / GLOSSARY

Words that sharpen
the question.

A short guide to the language used in our documentation records. Open a term to see why it matters.

Claim+

A statement that can be checked against evidence.

A published specification is a claim until its supporting method and context can be examined.

Documentation analysis+

An examination of existing records and published material.

It does not substitute for testing a physical sample. Our current model files use this method.

Evidence+

Material that supports or challenges a specific statement.

Evidence must fit the question. A manufacturer image can show presentation but cannot establish battery performance.

Model identity+

The exact name and version to which a record applies.

Family names and similar packaging can hide differences. Keep the full model name attached to each source.

Provenance+

The origin and history of a source or item of evidence.

Record who published it, where it appeared and when it was accessed.

Reproducibility+

The ability to repeat a documented method and assess its result.

A useful test record describes the sample, conditions, equipment and limitations.

Uncertainty+

What remains unknown or unresolved in an interpretation.

Stating an uncertainty helps readers avoid treating an assumption as a measurement.
